I am in desperate need of a new digital camera. Last Christmas I was given the Nikon Coolpix and it's been nothing but a disappointment. The camera takes awful night shots, I incessantly get weird fuzzy circles sporadically placed in each photo, and everyone's eyes appear blurry [even when we haven't been drinking]. While I am fully aware these issues may be operator induced, I've had everyone play with the settings in attempt to find a better picture mode.I am not a photographer by any means, but I love taking pictures and would really love it if they turned out semi-decent in the end. Not hazy and ill-defined. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a point-and-shoot camera?

I have the Sony Cyber-Shot 8.1 MP Digital Camera and love it to death. The coolest part is it has a massive 3.5" touchscreen with a stylus. Oh yeah, and it takes amazing pictures. :)
My point & shoot is a Sony Cyber-Shot that's a few years old. It consistently takes good snapshots and has enough settings to be useful. I have no desire to replace it anytime soon. They're quite affordable these days too.
I'm a die hard Canon fan! I'm on my second digital elph PowerShot! Hands down. I've used a Sony digital camera- my parents both have one... and I'm partial to mine... I have the Canon Power Shot SD1000 Digital Elph and the Canon PowerShot S410 Digital Elph (older version) and couldn't be more pleased!! Has awesome settings and not too pricey!
I really love our idiot proof Canon PowerShot Elph. I even taught my technologically challenged mother to use it!
sorry.. i'm absolutely no help here.. i hate mine too!
Does anyone know anything about the Leica D-Lux 3 or the Leica D-Lux 2? These are less expensive than their $5,000 non D-Lux models. Ouch.
Word of warning on the Canon ELPH (mine is/WAS the SD850):
I had it about 2 weeks when I dropped it ON THE TABLE at a restaurant. It landed on the lens, jammed a spring in the[retractable] lens, & that was that..it would not operate. My friends told me the EXACT same thing happened to theirs when they dropped it from a very short distance as well. They want $185.00 to fix it! I know, I know..I dropped it, but things get dropped & w/ that in mind, they should make the lens springs stronger, or charge less for repairs!
I seriously love my little Canon PowerShot. I've had it for three years and still don't feel the need to upgrade.
Sometimes it takes better pix than my slr.
nikon d 40. sammy's camera, here in l.a.
i am NOT a photographer and i love how this thing shoots.
I replaced a Sony cyber-shot with an Olympus about 2 years ago because I had the same problems you're having.
Good luck. Camera shopping is never fun (IMO).
Leica's are the best in the market. But you will pay some coin. best bet is with the new Nikon D40x. You want a SLR camera.
The digital SLR's require lots of thinking/choosing settings, etc. Getting a Leica is like trying to run a marathon before you learn to crawl. The Coolpix is something I keep in my purse at all times just in case I want to take a shot. I have many, MANY cameras from the simplest to the big guns. The most reliable and easiest to use is the Fuji FinePix S5000. I can shoot from a moving car and it takes a clear shot. Alicia at Posy Gets Cozy uses a Fuji - one of the newer models.
Of course it's not that little credit card size camera like the Coolpix but I just get a bigger handbag and keep it in there.
Hope this helps.
Thanks so much for your comments everyone! This has been such a help.
Suzanne, I couldn't agree with you more. The SLR is a little out of my league right now. I also feel I need a good small digital before purchasing a larger camera. I wouldn't carry the big one with me all the time.
So funny you mentioned the Fugi because that's what I went with. My version came out 4 months ago and the man at the camera shop couldn't say enough wonderful things about it. He even showed us photographs and walked us through the different settings. He said it was, hands down, the best point and shoot for the average person.
