Apple Advice

What started out as an issue with iTunes has all but ended in the purchase of a new computer. When J and I moved "Inside the Loop" and prepared for our housing downsize, we decided to sell our individual PCs and purchase a MacBook Pro to share. We've never regretted our decision.

...until we decided to merge our iTunes. It doesn't work people. Apparently iTunes is not set up to be shared amongst multiple users and when done, complete havoc ensues. Case in point: When all of my Playlists were erased and half of my music no longer accessible. After four trips to the Genius Bar, I think we need to buy another computer. In all honesty, we've been toying with the idea anyway due to J's new work-related traveling. I’m getting my pick of the litter and I couldn’t be more stumped as to what I want. So Mac gurus, should I go for another MacBook Pro or opt for the 250GB MacBook? I sort of really like the idea of a glossy white laptop, but am scared of the smaller screen and slower processor when dealing with photos. Any thoughts?

Although I to am drawn to the clean, modern vibe of the white MacBook, I feel the better choice is the MacBook Pro - or at least it is in my work/play world.

I feel your pain with the whole itune multiple user problem.

Best of Luck.

Darby, Erika's sister sent me this link to weigh in on your troubles in the hopes that I could help.

Sadly I've never needed to share iTunes amongst multiple users on the same machine, so I can't help you on that one. I can send you to a source I've used in the past for help: http://www.macosxhints.com/ I'm sure you're familiar with it.

Also to weigh in on your upcoming purchase decision... From the looks of it you're going to want the Macbook Pro for high end photos. I have one and have never looked back. You're right 15 inches is the perfect laptop screen size for mobility and consistent use. It's my everyday/everything mac.

Also I try to check this site before making my mac purchases: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

Good luck!

As a long-time mac user, here's a quick rundown:

1.I had a macbook -- the white one, and it gets Dirty. Very Dirty. All the time. Avoid if possible.

2. The Macbook Pros are beautiful, silver, and are the go-to machines of all designers that need some power as well as a big screen to design on. I was/am one, and so, well, I want one badly!

3. As for memory -- ML and I are saving up for the little macbook to suffice us for now (we're broke and his PC is about to die as well), and to boost the memory capacity, we're going to get the time capsule.

3a.The Time Capsule: Not sure if you've read more on that, but this is pretty much a big, fat external hard drive that you can load EVERYTHING you have onto (its 1 gigabite people!), connect wirelessly to (if you have an airport), and even plug in a printer to and print remotely. Awesome right? Then you only load what you immediately need onto your computer if you're off to clients, coffee shops and the like.

And it saves stuff in case your computer dies like mine did. Which, saves you 1k or so to get it back. Horror of horrors, I tell you.

This probably should have been an email to you. Next time, I'll cut myself off, I promise!

Go for the Pro. My white MacBook is really dirty.

Ditto on the dirty. Had a white MacBook- I have a Pro now and love it. Still sleek look without having to wipe down the keyboard with Clorox wipes. I don't think they do any harm. Caveat though- the new OS- whatever cat name it has, has had a few hiccups. Nothing compared to that awful Vista though.

Get the Pro. I have a beautiful white MacBook...until you open it and notice the smudges and the CRACKS on the keyboard plate. I would like a Pro or an Air, but I think I use it waaaaay too much to have an Air. I had a firend who bought an Air and ran out of space in one day, so now he has a Pro. Good luck. We also have a new desktop and it's BEAUTIFUL. I think I might have bought it for looks more than function. I <3 Mac! I even have an apple sticker on my car...I'm a dork!

love your blog.

I don't know. I have a white macbook (me and my 4 kids {ages 4 - 13} and my husband) all use it ~ just because it is so awesome. We have other computers, but they all insist on waiting in line to use mine! I have never had a problem with it getting dirty, and I think we've had it for about 2 1/2 years. I LOVE it!!!!!
