Bar Tab

The more rundown a building, the more I love it. Seeing old landmarks repurposed into new endeavors fuels me, and there isn't a day that goes by where I don't visualize my dream of one day living in an old post office.

During my recent jaunt to New York City, I found myself standing on the corner of W Broadway and White Street smiling from ear to ear. I was at the locked-up entrance to an old Tribeca staple, the Liquor Store Bar. As the name suggests, it was a liquor store-turned-tavern housed in an 1825 townhouse. And it's the only preserved landmark townhouse in NYC zoned for the sale and distribution of alcohol.

It's been closed for a while and a new store is moving in. I couldn't help but chuckle at the cheekiness of the paper covered windows that read, "A GUY WALKS INTO A BAR AND ORDERS A MADRAS. HE WALKS OUT WITH A PAIR OF TROUSERS."

What better way to announce a clothing store is en route?

After browsing J. Crew's updated website, I discovered they are opening their first-ever Men's Shop in, you guessed it, the old Liquor Store Bar. The original wooden bar is still intact and come August, it will serve as the perfect backdrop for streamlined blazers, tailored slacks, and hand-picked collectibles. Upon opening, I imagine there will be steep bar tabs in part to their fine assortment of vintage watches and first-edition books.

Now that would be some cool, vintage signage to acquire!

Oh wow....I LOVE places like that. I MUCH prefer an old renovated building vs. a new one! Great find. :)

Love! My favorite store ever of course is from a movie I love Meg Ryan's children's bookshop in You've Got Mail. It's just so sweet.

One of my favorite watering holes is in an old post office, it's appropriately called Postino.

...I must have been too busy chasing the ice cream truck.

Seleta: I don't blame you one bit. If I had been distracted by the ice cream truck, I may have even stood up Corvette!

That looks like an awesome building and will no doubt be a great store. I hope to see it upon my next visit to NY.

Courtney - I was just talking to someone about this on Saturday. Andy Spade is doing some work for J. Crew and, rightly so, has made them aware that men don't care to shop in "women's stores." Having to walk through the silks and headbands might be putting them off. So, voila, your men's store. I think it's genius.

Mrs. Blandings: This is SO interesting and I'm thrilled you shared this. You're right, it just makes sense. And even as a woman, I love shopping in true men's stores - there's something so perfect about them. I can totally see the Andy Spade in this collaboration and I think it's going to do wonders for J. Crew.

'Tis why I heart NYC!

Orlando, where I have temporarily resided for the last 2 yrs., is the mecca of all things new, beige and highly unattractive.

Ugh...somebody shoot me or give me one-way ticket out of here!

Mickey Drexler is a freedom fighter. Don't get too attached to this store, they only signed a two or three year lease. Partners & Spade is indeed consulting on the store. They will carry great men's stuff like Birdwell Britches and Mister Freedom tote bags.

Store is supposed to open this coming Tuesday with #2 to follow shortly after at Garden State Plaza. Not quite as much of a picturesque setting but fun nonetheless.

Too bad there aren't more people in Houston that are of the same mindset as you. I love old buildings as well.
