Drive-Thru

I have a serious affinity for food trucks, actually any sort of mobile food carrier tickles my fancy! A little tribute to people who have gotten it right by serving fresh, homemade food while mastering the concept of branding.

Food Shark. Located in Marfa, TX, this silver beast stations itself under the pavillion between the railroad tracks and Marfa Book Co serving up Mediterranean dishes like Marfalafels and hummus. At night, the Food Shark roams the streets eager to feed late night movers and shakers.

Flip Happy Crepes. Made from scratch, with love, all from inside a vintage Airsteam. Flip Happy Crepes is located in Austin, TX and serves up sweet and savory crepes, as well as special breakfast crepes on Saturday.

DessertTruck. Started by two friends, Chris Chen and Jerome Chang, a former pastry sous chef at Le Cirque, they aim to make people smile one dessert at a time. DessertTruck is parked around St. Mark's Place in New York City and cranks out fine-dining desserts like Coconut Tapioca and Molten Chocolate Cake. All served in eco-friendly cups; doing both stomachs and the environment good!

UPDATE: How in the world could I leave out this gem of a food truck?

Didn't I see the crepe girls on the FOOD network-throwdown with Bobby Flay?
I love that these people had an idea and went for it.

It is my dream to visit Marfa someday soon. I will definitely add the Food Shark to my itinerary! Also, there's an awesome place called Skillet in Seattle, same idea: http://www.skilletstreetfood.com/

I'm rallying up for an Austin post soon, complete with my coverage of said flip happy crepes.

And considering that this weekend (whilst on vacation in the great state of texas) there was a big fat article on food trucks of americana in the travel section of some newspaper...

coincidence? I think not. (Of course Marfa and Flip Happy made the cut!)

In my hood the only food truck we ever see is what we call "The Local Child Molester" truck. It's a creepy guy who sells prepackaged ice cream to kiddos.

It's inspiring to see the other options out there. YUM! Wish I had not read this when I was hungry at 10:30 at night.

i agree with you, the idea of great food on wheels has always appealed to me. the name food shark in itself is appealing enough!

It was in this past weekend's USA Today travel section, brought to you by this little link:

http://www.usatoday.com/travel/destinations/10great/2008-07-10-food-trucks_N.htm

I'll be dropping by the Culver City's "Green Truck" in September -- maybe we can start an ongoing report of these, and more. Anyone have any secret stash of food trucks out there, or live in the cities that the article mentions? Get eating, and get back to us!

Ooooh yum! They look great. The closest thing we have here are pie carts - and the tonic for drunk revellers everywhere; the pie floater. Its a meat pie served in pea soup with tomato soup. Delish!

I can't wait to see the FOOD SHARK in Marfa myself! Thanks for the recommendation Courtney!
