I drove back to Austin yesterday and passed the defunct Starlite Drive-In in Brenham, TX. The theater closed in September of 1985, but the gorgeous typography on the still-standing screen makes me smile each time I skip by. I'd frequent the Starlite ad nauseam if it was still operating.

I'd make sure you weren't alone on these movie outings ;)
I love the Starlite! Whenever I take 290 to Houston, I wish it was still active. And I LOVE when I am heading back in the evenings and it's illuminated by the sunset.
I love the drive in. I always smile as I remember seeing ET at the drive in in the back of our blue station wagon! I would love to revive an old treasure such as the Starlite, what a treat that would be for young and old alike!
There's on that still operates on the west side of Houston:

Big Fun!
Drive-Ins were a Friday night MUST back in the day! Not too far from my house, we all piled into cars and everyone parked next to one another. The mosquito coils were lit non-stop, and I don't remember that we minded the intense summer heat back then. The pizza was to die for (yes, they served pizza)and so were the rest of the must-haves that the intermission rolling tapes called us to partake. Those were the days!
I love everything about that drive. My dream is to settle somewhere along there between Hempstead and Austin. So gorgeous (and close to Aggieland for games!)
I must say I never have been to a working drive in, but I have stopped for pictures of this place. In Sugar Land they show movies outside in Town Square, but it just doesn't have that same feeling!

I've always wanted to go to a drive-in - we almost made it to one in Trussville, AL once but it was so crowded they were already at capacity - I guess in some places it's isn't completely history yet.
Have you ever stopped for Blue Bell ice cream in Brenham? Yum.
Jules: In the Spring on the way to Round Top, we stopped for a tour of Blue Bell. We all ate our weight in ice cream...and loved every minute of it!
I LOVE IT - the font is great!
Wow - I recognized that old treasure at first glance! I graduated from Brenham High School in 1983 and spent some fun evenings at the Starlite. Thanks for the memory!
