The Neverending Shower

After ogling numerous outdoor showers, we finally built our own with the intent for it to be simple, private and functional. We started here:

And that lead to an entire Sunday of shopping, building, staining, connecting and mounting:

At this point, the only thing left was to connect the hot water heater to our pipes. That night I woke at 2AM realizing the pipes were hooked up backwards. Another few days were spent redoing the structure and pipe connections, as well as replacing our entire breaker panel to fit the addition of a 10 gallon water heater in the garage. Pandora's Box.

Now, the only bits left [we think] are to repair holes and get our backyard grass in order. Living in a one bathroom house, this extra shower will get loads of use! And just to clarify, our neighbors can not see from their windows. Mom asked.

I'm impressed that YOU were the one who woke up realizing there was a connection problem. You are a star DIY gal. After all your hard work, I do have one nagging thought that I almost hesitate to suggest ... but here it is. What about four wooden floor grids instead of one? It may be because I'm looking at photos instead of standing in front of the real deal, but it looks a bit like one might step off it while sudsing up. I think the visual scale would be better and perhaps physically more comfortable as well. And besides, that way you'd have room to shower with a friend and save water in these eco-conscious times.

Ms. Wis: That's reason number 298756435398349 why I could never build a house. I incessantly wake up thinking about things like that! Last night around 11 I sat straight up and said, "OMG we forgot to turn off our sprinkler!" We would have woken to quite the river in our front yard.

I always welcome constructive feedback and it's stuff like this that makes you think more astutely! While the scale of the mat isn't small enough to step off of, it's not quite as large as I'd like either. I was the one who kept my husband from making it twice this size! And now I want a little more space. I like the idea of more than one grid...and I laughed at the thought of "showering with friends!" Thank you!!

I love this, unfortunatly in my neighborhood we all have wrought iron fences (see example here: http://z.about.com/d/landscaping/1/0/B/F/wrought_iron_fence.jpg)which are pretty, but not condusive to outdoor showering (I am just NOT that confident! LOL!). I do have one question... will shampoo/bath products kill your grass? Is that a silly question? I know NOTHING about outdoor showers except that they look so pretty!

It looks great. Although, I still would be paranoid about using it even if you say the neighbors can't see anything.

That is SO neat! I've only used an outdoor shower at the beach, but in the backyard - heck yah! I might be a little paranoid about the neighbors too, but still...that is a very cool idea.

It looks so good, C! You guys did a great job. I agree with Carolina, though. I would still be paranoid about the neighbors. Hopefully they won't read this and decide to peek through your fence!

It looks fantastic! You two did such an awesome job!

Your shower looks so great! Are you planning on a curtain? I think this one (with the ruffles) would be divine!

Love it. And really love the shower head.

GREAT JOB!!!!!

We renovated our house for the first four months of our moving down here. Picture moving into a house and starting renovation while unpacking boxes. Insane. OM Gosh I think I suffered a slight nervous breakdown during the process. And my poor husband, well he just suffered. The kids did great. They seemed to not care about chaos, sheetrock dust, crazy contractors, or mommy's coo-coo moments.

That is so awesome, Courtney! I was just commenting to someone how I would love an outdoor shower one day. And to think you did this yourselves? So cool!

Looks Wonderful! You know I am jealous!

Who is your hot plumber? Is he for hire?

Courtney said...

I promise y'all, you can not in any way or form see someone showering. Unless you hoist yourself over the fence, at which case I would be well aware of those peeping toms.

Erika: He doesn't come cheap.

I LOVE it! I'm sure it'll get lots of use since Houston stays warm so many months of the year!

You two are way too cool, that is the greatest and you did it yourselves!?!

what about that window I see up there on the right? are you sure - you are going to put a fence around it - or a cute sunbrella fabric on a loop? hmmm. I would be too scared - what about the meter man? or the yard man? it looks adorable though. good job. put I'm like your mom. worry about you out there butt naked for everyone to see.

Courtney said...

Joni: I'm dying laughing. 1) Meter Man (or anyone for that matter) can't get into our backyard. It's locked up like Fort Knox back there. 2) Husband is the yard man, so no worries there!

That window you see is because I'm standing way back taking the pic zoomed in. Once you are actually standing at the shower, the views are all completely blocked by my roofline or the 8' ivy covered fence. Trust me, I would never in a million years be out there if I thought for one second I would be on parade!

Wow! You did it! This is very cool and even more impressive!

A Sunday? A SUNDAY?!! This would have taken me 26 years to accomplish...well, to have picked out a shower head anyway. Have mercy! It's fantastic!

Dolce said...

This is the coolest thing I've ever seen. You and your husband must be really handy because there is no way I would be able to accomplish this. I think it's great!

I agree with everybody on this! I wish I were this skilled!!!!

Very cool - I now HAVE to have one of these - our yard is a sand pit pretending to be a regular yard.

What about a curved metal pipe going around the top with Sunbrella fabric with metal gromets in it to turn it into a shower curtain? I suggest this like I actually do this sort of thing - I'm more like management material - I stand on the porch and say things like "to the left a little" to my husband.

J said...

OK, anyone seriously interested in this project please email Courtney direct...I thought, no problem a little bit of pipe and a shower head won't cost more than a few hundred dollars. Don't get me wrong I am VERY glad we have this now, but wish I would have had some insight on questions to ask and things to look for. FYI, not so handy, just figure if I break it, then I can pay a pro to come make it better, either way we have a chance on saving a few dollars by attempting ourselves.

Courtney said...

J's right...we went a tadddddd over budget, but we learned a lot along the way. That's worth something, right?!

Hold up! I am very concerned for you. If you look at the second picture in this post you can see the window on the second floor of your next door neighbor. Really, from the pic, it would be easy for them to see you. I'm just saying. Maybe the perspective is different in the pic, but do me a favor and check it out. Oh Lord.

Courtney said...

Anon: I know it appears that way from the angle I was standing, but I assure you! There is no way you would catch me out there if I thought for even one second someone could peak over. I'd have shut down the operation a long time ago!!
