Prep School

Team USA looked sharp for the Olympic Opening Ceremony in preppy uniforms designed by the American King, Ralph Lauren.

The tropical wool blazers emblazoned with Polo ponies and Olympic rings, off-white wool trousers, cotton broadcloth shirts, white twill newsboy caps and striped silk neckwear made for the company's "highest-profile moment" in its 41-year history, according to Lauren. And for those in need of dressing assistance, each athlete received a booklet of tips like how to button a blazer, tie a tie, and walk and talk in the uniform.

He certainly is the American King. That was probably the easiest decision they had to make...Let's see who should design the uniforms that captures American Sportswear???

I absolutely loved this look. It was classic American sportswear. Now, have you seen the horrid warm up suits they have to wear at the medal ceremonies? I am a big fan of Nike, but whoever is responsible for that mess deserves a public flogging.

They are great - and kick ass over the Australian ones (but that isn't hard - have you seen them ewwwww!)

I thought they looked pretty sharp. Though, truthfully, I wasn't completely loving the caps. But Ralph was still such an obvious (and great) choice for the uniforms.

Beefy: I agree. They aren't really my personal style, but they certainly made an impact against the navy blazers. Overall I thought they looked fantastic and the caps kept them from looking uptight as well.

And I replied to your comment on the chairs. I want to see them!

This is really interesting...especially given last weeks challenge on Project Runway where the contestants designed uniforms....

I may have to have a compare/contrast post...

I loved their look and Courtney you are so right the caps really made the ensemble a bit more casual. I wonder how they work the sizing...does each athlete then get them tailored to fit them just so?

Courtney said...

Sarah: I read that the uniforms were being sewn in China until the very last minute, almost every one tailored specifically for each individual athlete. And the reason they were a bit behind on the production schedule: apparently former NBC anchor Tom Brokaw helped broker the uniform deal, which wasn't put to bed until very late in the game for a such a massive job. Pretty neat, huh?!

I think they must have some rule about including caps - remember those terrible Roots hats? http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://dsp.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pG01-1382014p275w.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp%3FproductId%3D1796889&h=275&w=275&sz=25&hl=en&start=4&um=1&tbnid=pCGkTGeTgUjntM:&tbnh=114&tbnw=114&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dolympics%2Bcap%2Broots%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN
Ralph is a definite upgrade.

Oh my gosh, Stephanie! I completely forgot about those. I wonder if that's true....

J, do you know anything about this? Any of your track buds forced into hats for OC?

The French pretty much KILLED it with their striped dress shirts and red obi belts- I was so impressed. Of course that is expected, they are French after all, and style is genetic. Which team had those HORRID floral dresses and bonnets???
