Round Top Roundup

Saturday morning I woke bright and early for Preview Weekend in Round Top, Texas. Endless miles of cow pastures and country fields filled with vendors, tents, heavenly antiques and glorious junk. We arrived by 8AM, an hour before they opened, which was ideal for early bird scouting [and shopping]! It was a quick supermarket sweep and 4 hours later I headed home with an empty wallet and Cheshire grin.

Ever since I saw a slew of these Dr. Nut crates at Installations, I've been on the hunt. And I love that the company was based in little ole Jennings, LA!

Found these Raisin and Currant porcelain jars at the always inspiring Clutter. I love their shape, colors and school-ish vibe. Will look equally great holding fresh flowers or pencils.

This rug was the very first thing I spotted at Round Top. After going back to look at it 4 times, leaving the show, and then making my husband turn the car around "just so I could look once more," I figured I should probably bite the bullet. It's about 20-30 yrs old, 100% wool, 2-sided and in great condition. Definitely needs some cleaning, but the punchy kelly and lime greens mixed with marigold and orange look perfect in my house.

I thumbed through a table of embossed leather pelts for nearly half an hour before choosing which color to buy. I left with the gold stingray and plan to use it on the backside of my chair project. I could have easily left with the entire lot, including that lipstick red patent alligator piece!

Silver Flower Frog. Nothing to write home about, but I needed one for my flower arrangements and the price was right.

Iron Horse Hooks. I plan to use one for towels near my outdoor shower.

Reversible Wool Poncho that would give Little Red Riding Hood a run for her money. Plaid on one side, black on the other and the best $8 find of the day.

And my favorite score: an airtight French tobacco container made from chrome, glass, leather and cork. The porthole-like lid sold me and its cork lined interior is the perfect safe haven for watches and rings.

The only thing that could have made the day any better [albeit more competitive] was having my partner-in-crime in tow.

Hi Court,

I love all of your finds. You have an awesome husband who loves coming with ya. Mine tends to complain a bit as I drag him around.Though I admit he does alot better at junk sales instead of a normal retail store. I can't wait to go to a flea market such as Round Top. I was just at the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market and Antique Garage in NYC and left empty handed :( Have you ever heard of the Elephant's trunk in CT? I have it written down, but have yet to go.

Enjoy all of your finds! The poncho looks totally like you. Even though I only know you thru what I read. I'm pretty sure it's going to look great on ya.The rug is too die for. It looks like the pattern could be on a great piece of painted pottery. I adore the rest of the pieces as well. You must be wiped from all that shopping. Next time around I must latch on to your trip :)

Camila: Would love to have you join us any time! And I do have a great man, but I should have prefaced by saying I left him sleeping in the car for 2 of the 4 shopping hours. Then I kept him well fed. Just a few tricks of the trade that seem to work well :)

I haven't heard of Elephant's Trunk, but I'll have to add that to a must do list. So many flea markets, so little time [and money]...

Courtney, I just found your blog spot the other day and wanted to e-mail you to "introduce myself" but for whatever reason my e-mail wouldn't go through. Anyway, I wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying your blog. You are a wonderful breath of fresh air. And, oh so precious!!!!

I wanna go to Round Top with YOU!!! I too live in Houston (I grew up in Louisiana but have been in Houston for the past 16 years. Houston is now home but I will forever have deeply planted roots in Louisiana!!!)

I was tickled to see that you sited Jennings, Louisiana. I grew up very close to there. I love that little town. Very quaint!

Okay, enough public chatter. :) Thanks so much for sharing your finds with us.

My cousin was on the Dr. Nut commercials in the 7o's.

CC: I'm so so sorry your email wouldn't go through. Please try again so we can chat! Round Top is a great trip if you haven't been yet, and totally doable in one day driving from Houston. It is still going on until next weekend, so you should check it out if you can. So glad you found me and thanks for the kind words!

Elizabeth H: How funny! And the very best claim to fame. Is it on You Tube?

Oh dear, here I am all drooling and chomping at the bit with all these treasures!

I CANNOT wait until my time at Round Top comes! (yeah yeah yeah, in few years).

I also cannot believe that ML actually, semi-enthusiastically, agreed to come with me for both Round Top AND Brimfield! (Before we leave for the great state of texas).

Although your hints of well fed-ness does not go unnoticed, and I'm sure a couple of breakfast tacos never heart any man's stomach.

Love the treasures. I've been trolling thrift stores/ebay for a cape/poncho just like that- good job!

Ahhh! My mom and I are still trying to figure out if we can get to Round Top this weekend, and this just makes me want it to happen so so much more. We've only been once before, but it was heaven. We've both been dying to get back ever since.

Courtney-

I'm typing as I'm jumping up and down on all of your great treasures!! Yahoo...

My favorites are the Dr. Nut and tobacco container!! I have added this to my task to surf the net when I can't sleep at night to look for a Dr. Nut crate tobacco holder!

Good job my friend! I always heard of the Round Top I will have to maybe visit my sister in Dallas around this time next year and rent a U-Haul. Make that a semi!

Court-
Great stuff. So sorry I didn't get the chance to meet you. I didn't get out to Warrenton until about noon. You were smart and shopped while it was at least a little cooler in the AM. Went out to Installations Antiques in Houston. What a GREAT place. Stay in touch - I know we'll hook up at some point down the dusty road...

Peace.

Hiya Courtney,

Here is the website for Elephant's Trunk: www.etflea.com . I wonder if Erin from Elements of Style has been.

It's only a hop, skip and a jump away from me. If you ever want to come to the ny area again for a haircut etc I would love to host ya!

The Tabac container? Absolutely genius. That's something that would be right up my alley. One day you ought to come out this way for the Alameda Antiques fair, the first Sunday of every month. You'd be the perfect person to go with.
