Side By Side

Shophouses are vernacular architectural buildings constructed between 1840 and 1960 that are native and unique to urban Southeast Asia. They typically consist of shops on the ground floor and residential accommodations upstairs.

They are well designed to minimize the discomfort of a tropical climate with internal walls that allow light and natural ventilation inside, high ceilings for good air circulation, and overlapping roof tiles that cool the roof and reduce radiation.

I absolutely adore the look, feel and history of these old buildings that still sit side by side after so many years.

Emily: They do have such a southern feel don't they! Those high windows and intricate moldings. So beautiful.

Absolutely exquisite!
I couldn't have guessed where they were taken.
I agree it looks Southern. Also like San Francisco.

They are so beautiful! The first set of buildings looks like a more ornate version of the cast iron buildings in SoHo. The rest look like they are right out of South Carolina or New Orleans' French Quarter. Did the French influence this style?

I love these.

Dwell did a piece on one that got an ultra-mod, ultra swank renovation - they left the front intact, but made the back all mod ...
