Trial by Fire

Last Sunday we woke to a loud boom and an orange glow hovering above our garage. Lightening struck the utility pole behind our house and it was one fiery mess. We quickly called 911, gathered our valuables and left the house in wrinkled pajamas.

Say you have mere minutes to collect your most prized possessions, what would you take? We had a big laugh riffling through our "goodie bag" once the fire was out.

Courtney's Picks:
Laptops. Muy, muy importante! Pictures, files, documents—most everything in one spot.

Gobs of vintage costume jewelry. My Uncle was an antique dealer and I always raided his jewelry stash for the best of the best. I made sure to grab handfuls of my favorite pieces, certainly a nice way to accentuate the pajamas I was wearing.

Engagement ring and diamond pendant. Both very sentimental to me. My Grandmother managed a jewelry shop in downtown Baton Rouge and when the shop closed, she purchased a few loose diamonds. My Uncle had the pendant made out of those diamonds and gave it to me on my wedding day.

Inherited mink cape. What everyone should save from fires! My Grandpa gave my Mom this fur when she was 18 and it’s still so stylish today. This piece will forever be a closet staple for me and I love seeing my Mom’s initials embroidered on the inside. I thought J was going to fall out of his chair when he realized I made an effort to go into the way back of his closet and retrieve the fur.

5-Year Journals. We've both been working on these for almost a year now and I can't wait to have them completed in 2012. There was no way I was leaving behind these books filled with our day to day memories.

J's Picks:
Rings and inherited watch that belonged to his Dad. Totally understandable.

Passports. Yes, we are American and these aren't necessary for everyday living. But if we had lost our house, a weekend in The Galapagos Islands would have been nice. I was at least prepared for an exotic trip with my fur and jewels.

Tax refund check. Now I agree, that was a genius move! Could help fund our trip to said Islands.

Keys to our classic car. You know, the one that is housed inside the garage that would have burned should the utility pole have fallen.

We tested our ability to pack under pressure and we have been laughing ever since. Fortunately there was no damage, so we were able to keep all things packed or not. Pretend you have only 5 minutes to round up your goods, what makes the list?

wow! I'm glad everything is ok...

I have absolutely no idea what I would pack in 5 minutes!

1) computer
2) jewelry
3) terriers (Penelope & Paisley)
4) money jar (where our spare change accumulates)
5) cowboy boots

so funny to hear the way that guys pack versus girls (much more logical with passports, tax refund checks, etc.) if i had to grab 3 things they would be:

-laptop
-jewelry from my mom and grandma
-my ridiculous distressed copy of 'catcher in the rye'

hee-larious!

you emergency pack like me ... I can just see you on a cruise to the Galapagos in furs and jewels!

Adding: I'm happy it was a false alarm ... but seriously, with all this act of God insanity in Houston - hurricanes, lightening bolts - you guys *might* want to think about a vacation so that you miss the swarms of locusts.

This post is freaking hilarious... I am actually laughing out loud at the mental image of one stylish Texas gal running around in the face of imminent danger grabing jewls, fur and electrical goods! :-)

Good moves, I'd have no idea where to start...

This is a great one! (And I'm also happy to hear that you kids are still safe and sound)

As for my list, I contemplated and decided that my list involved things most sentimental to me:
1.2 photographs of my parents and grandparents
2.childhood quilt
3.camera
4.computer
5. probably raid my costume jewelery as well.

As for ML, I'm sure it would include the shark's skull we have somewhere stashed in our closet and probably an architecture book or two!

C, you forgot to mention our most valuable grab....BURKLY DELUXE, she was first in the car!!

Courtney, thanks for the good laugh I needed that! The visual of you in your jammies grabbing furs and jewels is funny and endearing.

In five minutes I could grab my kids, their luvies (muy importante) and my purse. With the extra few minutes I would probably run around in circles wondering what I should grab, it wouldn't be pretty I'm not good under pressure.

Oh my goodness, I can barely imagine!

(Glad everything is ok.)

I would grab my teddy bear (easy because I sleep w/ him everynight... don't laugh!), my cat, my laptop, my bible, definitely my jewelry box, and my wedding album. G would have to get the paperwork, etc!!!

I'm with Sarah, though. I would probably be running around screaming, and it would be really hard for me get everything together!

Btw, thanks for your sweet words on my post yesterday... you are a doll and it is good to know Miss Deluxe got some extra snuggles. Give her a big hug for me!

Glad you guys are okay!

In 5 minutes I would grab...
1. Derek and I have one binder that has all of our taxes info, copies of our DL's & passports, our pre-nup, etc. - so I would grab that.
2. My shoes! I don't know how I would pull this off in 5 minutes (but I could never afford to replace all of my precious shoes!)so I would have to find a way!
3. My dogs - but I wouldn't technically have to "grab them" as they would likely be out the door before I would!
4. My new macbook!
5. My Grandmothers hankie & rosary (I am jewish - but it means a lot to me)
6. My mothers wedding rings & tennis bracelet

I think that is all I would be able to manage in 5 minutes! LOL!

See, this is why I need to switch to a laptop. It would take me 5 minutes alone just to unhook the CPU!

My question is: why have y'all not cashed that refund check yet?!

Thank is a really tricky one! Because I moved a few months ago to a tiny town, I didn't bring any of my special things with me - they are packed up back home - so I would happily let the whole place burn! Might have to give the folks some instructions though, should there be a fire at their place! Love the post hun xx

I mean, between the alarms and the floods and the electrical outages, you have been through the ringer lately, Courtney!

Joyce said...

Oh my Courtney! I hope things settle down a bit for you to catch your breath!
Hmmm... only 5 minutes? Does it count if I can throw things out the window?
1. dog/Kelly
2. husband
3. computer
4. cell phone
5. wedding/eng ring
6. clean underwear
7. my dad's old ring
8. my inhaler because I'm sure by this point I would go into an asthma attack from the excitment!!

I love this post! So fun!!

Oh, That is too funny. Yet perfect. Instinctual grabs are grabs all the same!

We have been through a few "disasters"(Hurricane/tornado country) and for our family have it down to a science. All Photo albums (4 kids) and the accompanying newspapers on the day (and state) they were born are put in a large waterproof bag...with handle (we have hurricane seasons...and have some pix albums that have been in there for 5-6 years!) Not neccesarily THE FIRST priority... But if it is all kept together...it's good to go without thinking too hard.

Likewise...A file that contains all important docs. House title, Ins. company, passport, birth Cert's,SS#'s and medical info. All put in an expandable file. with handle.

cell phones, laptop. If we think of them.

How scary for ya...but glad you are OK!!

BTW...found you through Urban Grace. LOVE your great blog!

. . . what about the awful picture your husband won at some art show, now that is a treasure you can't leave behind!

I would try to grab: my laptop, as many purses and I could shove in a pillow case, dump the shoes out of their boxes and into a pillow case too, my wedding rings, my 2 cats, and a piece of artwork that was in my grandma's house and now mine. And then I would probably grab junk that I thought at the time was priceless and be mad because I wasted time gathering crap.

Glad you're okay - it's been a crazy month for you!

Courtney said...

What a couple of weeks you all have had!! I am so glad that there was not a major catastrophe (and that you had such a hilarious post to share!)

First priorities to grab would be the dogs, my inhaler, my laptop and cell phone. The same of my husband's things if he hadn't grabbed them. Hopefully, one of us would get our important paperwork.

After that, I can only imagine what my panicked state might lead me to grab- truthfully, I keep envisioning myself trying to drag my best piece of furniture out the front door, probably much to our neighbors amusement!

Oh! And it's good to hear you all did grab Burkly too ;)

Aside from your fire scare, I LOVE this! One of my favs yet.

Hmmm, five minutes huh?

4 offspring and a cat, wedding photos, macbook, sweet paintings made by little hands. Oh, and my red Born boots that are no longer in production. [I think]

Mrs. Blandings said...

What? I think your picks make total sense. What else would you have grabbed? Mine would be frighteningly close. During - the real - tornado scares, I always grab jewelry first then work from there. Glad it's a happy ending.

You really have had a bit of chaos lately! I think what you grabbed was absolute perfection...even though the refund check and the passports were probably a good addition to your "loot".

Pink Wallpaper said...

oh my! you have definitely been through some trying times lately!! we too have had the utility pole catch on fire...twice in our backyard- both times where in the middle of the night...

Very interesting post - I'm glad that you made it out okay and that all is well.

Just had to say that those vintage costume jewels are drop dead gorgeous. What a treasure chest - lucky you!

Wow, I love everything! I have a vintage mannequin that I inherited, and I don't have a stand for it. Do you have any suggestions, as to what I can use??? Thanks!

how scary!!! I'm glad there was no damage done. Here are my picks:
1. the kid
2. the dog
3. laptop
4. purse
5. jewelry box

thehomebound said...

I totally agree with your picks. The laptop obviously is key and the refund check too. But you know, I would have grabbed things that I love a lot faster than things I need. Grab the coat and work it out!

Wow!! How scary! I'm so glad you're ok and that nothing was damaged!

Side note- my friend Lauren sent me an email today that simply said "When you read the blog Inside the Loop, on a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you want to be Courtney?" Clearly we're both a bit obsessed...! :)

glad this was just a false alarm, but this is a fun game! I've actually given this some thought, which is slightly morbid, but I guess I'm just prepared?

- cat/dog/husband (though surely he could take care of himself)
- my wedding rings and my grandmother's ring, which is really the only totally irreplaceable thing I have (I always wear it when we travel in case the house burns or is broken into while we're gone, how weird is that?!)
- then all of the important papers and things which should really be in a safetly deposit box anyway
- and if we had time a couple of boxes of pictures that we don't have digital copies of (which probably means we should grab the laptops too)
- and a little drop-leaf table that was one of the first pieces of furniture my parents bought after they got married

My goodness - isn't isn't strange how the scary situations can turn into the funniest ones when you've had a minute to catch your breath!
I would probably grab the dog and then be completely lost - perhaps a bottle of wine to calm me down.
