We're Movin' On Up

...to the East side of. the. world. As of April 1, my husband's job will send us on travels throughout Asia Pacific, while making Kuala Lumpur our new home for the next 3 years! So I'm preparing to leave Houston and my bungalow "Inside the Loop," mustering up the courage for goodbyes see-you-laters, and anticipating life as an Expat wife.

I'm equal parts floored and scared to death, but I'm ready for the growth and most of all, the sights! For the curious who instantly wonder what I will be doing and what our journey will hold, I say joyfully [albeit anxiously] "I haven't a clue!" And I'm OK with that; sometimes not having answers is a nice change. But I do know that I'm going into this experience with my very best friend and I couldn't imagine anything more comforting. Posts may be a bit sparse over the next few weeks as I pack, sell, rent and tie up loose ends, but please stand by because I promise to bring you along for one heck of a ride!

Meg, Irene and Jenny, pen pals extraordinaire, you girls will never know how much your knowledge has opened my head and heart to this opportunity. And anyone with Malaysian advice, I'm all ears! Change is good.

Ohhh. So, it's officially out to the world-wide-web. I could cry. I'm sad. But happy for you and what these next 3 years will bring for you and JJ. Now I have to go get Skype. I can't wait to see you later this month... it'll be a big-hurrah... but not our last big hurrah.

That is hysterical. My parent and I are expats from Malaysia living in Houston! Enjoy yourself. Malaysia is great gateway to all the other beautiful asian countries around. Not as beautiful as home of course but then I am a little bias!

How fine!!! What a perfect time in your life for an exciting adventure!!! You will look back on this wonderful opportunity and agree the timing could not have been better! On the selfish side... I was just getting to "know" you and hoping to bump into you in Houston sometime!!! Now... you'll have to add a subtext to "in (side) the loop... now out (side) the loop... for a while!" Best wishes and looking forward to all of the international posts and info!!!

We are expats living in Germany fo rthe next 2 years and my advice is to look into an expat group google it. I can say is easy because its not. My issue is the language barrier, but also its not like a vacation and sometimes people think it is. Good luck.

how cool! that is great and seriously exciting news. i lived in southeast asia for a few years and it was FABULOUS. the sights, the smells, people, food... well you get the picture. honestly what a great opportunity, especially for someone who seems motivated to get up and out and see what's around you! if anything this will make amazing blog fodder. so looking forward to following you on your journey!

SO excited for you! and totally jealous!

whatcha gonna do with the Burks?! I will volunteer to board her while you're gone :) she and Bunny would get along famously.

Courtney said...

Thank you all for your excitement and prayers! And we're certainly bringing Burks along - she's family after all :)

Frau: Thanks so much for your honest advice. I'm certainly not looking at this as a vacation as I know I'm going to feel lonely, scared and culture shocked. But we only get one shot a life and the thought of pushing my cultural boundaries and making myself a little uncomfortable actually seems like it will be good for me. I know the change will not be easy, but I think those are the experiences that bring the greatest rewards!

That's awesome! I did basically the same thing about a year ago (moved from Houston to Hong Kong with the boy) - and it turned out to have been the best thing I ever could have done.

My first trip to KL is in a few weeks for work - I'll let you know about anything fun I find!

FYI - my boss lives there and loves it (and she's American, at least by schooling). I think there's a fun expat community.

Sounds like an excellent adventure and good luck!
I would consider renting out your house and not selling. First, I am not a real estate person. I own a house I rent out in the Heights because it abuts my property and I was afraid someone would tear it down and build something huge. It was my first experience as a landlord and I have to say after 3 years I have really enjoyed it. That being said, there are some tips and pitfalls and I would be happy to discuss them with you if you want. You might be considering a service to handle your property and I've never done that but renting yourself can be pretty easy. You will need to have someone in town, though, to keep and eye on it for you.

Courtney said...

Beth: We are renting our house and already have tenants, but I do have a few questions and would love for you to email me!

I have read your blog before, but I'm so happy I came back over to see what you have been up to. I have a feeling I will be in the same boat as you within the next year and a half as my boyfriend (hopefully fiancé before we move) will be trying to move abroad with his company.

Looks like it will be the same 3 years as you have planned, and we have no idea where it will be yet, but it will sure be an adventure.

I look forward to reading all about your preparations and travels along the way, as I will need all the advice I can get.

Wow, what an exciting adventure! Expat life can be pretty great (my brother and his family and my mom all live overseas). Can't wait to see Malaysia via your blog!

Also I'm eager to see how things work out for Burks. I've had a few opportunities to move overseas (see above) but never fully considered it because of my cat. I know I could take him with, but he's quite old and I'm not sure he'd survive the hassle. So stateside I remain. But Miss B looks like a world-traveler already. I'd say keep us updated, but I've no doubt you will. :)

PS - TX will miss you!
