Office Space

I'm an office supply junkie that likes to hoard the good stuff. For six years, I've held onto four never-before-seen paperclips that came off a Lucky magazine press kit. [They're from Kinokuniya Book Store in Rockefeller Center and I should have purchased a lifetime supply, darn hindsight.] When I learned of our move to Asia Pacific, one of my first thoughts included visions of bookstores brimming with industrial, utilitarian, non-plastic supplies. I'm now on a mad hunt.

When it comes to stocking your desk, what's your go-to splurge or must-have?

Bright color Post-it note tags...i rarely use them, but I must have them on my desk!! They are so bright and cheery I'm afraid to use them and loose the brightness! haha

I love unusual Sticky Notes. My mother still gets me the strangest sticky notes she can find every Christmas and I am in my 30's!

My favorite is a stack of Tree Frog Stickies.

Oh man. Office supplies are my crack. Hands down, my favorite office supply possessions are my label maker (which is really old but that makes it better!! I think it adds character to the labels) and the cute, pattered file folders that I found at a store in Brooklyn - they keep my life in order. I also love a good extra fine pen. The finer the better.

I have three pretty holders - one for pens/pencils, one for large paper clips, and the other for small candies. The pen holder is gray with white detailing etched out of it and is simply gorgeous. It was sold as a candle holder (with a candle in it), but I've repurposed it. And the other two are made out a of mother of pearl like substance - aqua green on the inside, white on the out, with a ribbon of brown around the edges. Delightful to look at!

I want, no NEED, amazingly wonderful, thick, crisp, personalized (at least an initial) notepads... perfect for, uh, all of those notes : - )

I also have to agree with good pens, no Bics or Papermates please! Right now, I'm loving Pilot's extra fine razor point, in keppy green.

I'm also a fan of fun & fab paper clips... the ones I use when sending out all of my press kits are "Clipiola, Italian paper clips" purchased from a near by museum gift shop.

LOVE desk accessories, when I purchased my first set, I knew I was a working woman, ha!!!

I am a stationary junkie too. My favourites are fine-point pens and those little black squeezy clips for stacks of paper. My stapler has my name on it and all my co-workers know that they are risking their lives if they touch it!

What an intersting and rather funny bio you have. Isn't it great to have a carrer doing something you not only enjoy, but that you do better than anything else?

Mister Write said...

Sorry-I meant to mention that I enjoy your writing style; your 'voice' really lets your personality come through.

I don't know if thisa qualifies as a legitimate reply to your query, but you mentioned paper clips.I hate them. I use, of all things, "bobby pins." I find they dont crinkle the corner of the papers like clips do.

Wierd, huh?

I need a great calendar and beautiful stationary.

Kat said...

A heavy-weighted smooth writing pen... one that just glides across the page. Oh, and some personalized stationery, but that is really office supplies.

First, congrats on being blog o'the week!.

Second, tiny post it notes that are 1/2 inch x 3/4 inch. they came from muji in london. they're practically perfect in every way.

Post-its in colors other than standard yellow.

I hate small metal paper clips. I only use the jumbo metal clips. No cheap plastic ones either. Bleech!

I have my Rio Red swingline stapler on my desk like a good employee :-)

Office supplies? Totally addicted for life!

From reading the comments already posted I think we need to form a support group. I, too, am a office supply junkie. I love my notepads, pens, unique paper clips, etc...I have an entire copy paper box full of "neat stuff" I collected from when I worked with your mom at the clinic. I won't let anyone touch any of it. IT'S MINE!

I have to agree- office supplies are my secret weakness. I really love super fine tipped pens and markers. I tend to gravitate towards brighter colored objects, but I can't live without pens for inking. :)

Must have Hello Kitty everything, best of which is a mini dustpan perfect for sweeping dust from keyboards and crumbs from surfaces!

I am obsessed with office supplies, too! I know there are aisles and aisles of office supplies in Heaven.

My absolute favorite are markers. Any kind...dry erase, permanent, highlighters, skinny pen tip ones, big fat crayolas...

ahh, thanks for the trip through the office max in my head...it was a fun one!

Since I teach... my desk is kind of a community freebie. No point in stocking up on nice stuff.

But on top... I need my bonsai plants to keep me calm. I love to trim up the little plants when I want to duct tape a kid to the wall. Or yell WTF! I just calmly rake the pebbles and ponder where to trim the plant to have it grow in a fun shape.

Le Pen: Purple fine tips at my desk and in purse for all meetings. Brown by all telephones. Love the fine tip and won't smear if you're a lefty... or a righty that writes backwards like a lefty and me!

Phone Message Pads: Bought in international office supply stores- France, Italy, Mexico (more fun in foreign languages and next to the brown Le Pens). Better stock up... these might be dinosaurs soon!

Unusual Metal Clips- find these in hardware stores too. Great for the pantry as well... throw out all "Chip Clips" in favor of these. My favorites came from some cool Japanese store in Covent Garden (London) years ago.

International Restaurant Ashtrays- to keep separate all those metal and paperclips, sticky notes, stamps, to-be-filed business cards etc. Personal favorites include Harry's Bar, Venice- the original Maxim's in Paris (stole from my mom!) and a The Plaza (before they closed and re-opened), New York. Note: these are also great in the kitchen for salt cellars and olive oil bottles and by the sink for rings when cooking and washing hands.

Lined Blank Journals: Leather, striped, China silk-covered, spiral bound, big, small you name it! Can't EVER have enough of these!

Lilac Colored Junior and Letter Sized Ampads. Works well with above mentioned purple Le Pen.

I LOVE ink pens, not gel pens...and mini binder clips because they come in colors.

Pens, just pens, gel pens, multicoloured, thick nibbed. Funny thing is I hardly write, I mostly type.

How funny... I just posted today abt what I still want in my newly created workspace. I did go to an antique mall a while back to pick up some dishes and containers and such: http://perfectsentiment.blogspot.com/2009/03/creative-storage.html

Post-it notes for sure! I use them like they are 'going out of style' at work. My motto: the brighter the better!

have you found anything fantastic? I'd be right there with you on that hunt.

Oh my god!!! I'm glad there are other office supply addicts out there...I feel so out of sorts without highlighters, post it notes, cap erasers, and of course LOADS of stickers and funky stationary that I use to leave notes for my roommates all the time. :D I also like little pretty boxes to store things I collect in.

LindsB said...

Cheap bic blue pens, like the kind that you can get 12 for a buck. I can't write with anything else, its really an obsession. Also my label maker- I love to label EVERYTHING.

I love offic supplies! My mom likes to joke when I ask to go to a store for paper or pens or something because she always responds with, "Your whole room has more paper in it than any OfficeMax out there!"

I suppose it's true, I collect paper. Paper and pens.

My favorite supply has to be paper, in any form, it's like a form of high when I see and brand new notebook with perfectly crisp, white sheets of paper just waiting to be written on!

My second favorite is Pilot P-500 pens, they are the best pens ever! They are Mega-Super-Ultra-Fine tip pens that don't bleed through!

In third place comes all the little gadgets like mini-staplers, mini-tape despencers.
(I ALWAYS have tape in my room, I don't even know where they all come from, but I always have tape.)

I'm and office supply junkie just like all of you. So I am here to reassure all you mothers that the addiction still lives on in the younger generations! =]

-Love from your high school friend, Ella.

OMG, "Shared Universe" sounds like Colby, LOL! And I would say this Office Supply Addiction must be genetic, but apparently it is more like an epidemic!

The secretary at school used to say I was like a little mouse: every time she heard "rooting around" in the the supply closet she just knew it was me, back in there again for SOMETHING! Legal pads, clip boards, post it's, good pens, markers..I LOVE IT ALL! I do not know why.

BUT my ALL-TIME FAV, probably bordering on FETISH would have to be SHARPIES!!! I love them! I have them in ALL sizes & colors & tips. I secretly cringe when someone wants to use them b/c I am very anal about NOT squishing the tips & I find "regular people" just do not know how to care for a Sharpie! I currently have at least 4 drawers in different areas of the house that have at LEAST 5-10 Black Sharpies at arm's reach (all with GOOD tips, I assure you!). My colored Sharpies are under lock & key in my art desk for MY use only...

Okay, maybe I've passed "bordering" fetish?

Boomka said...

Oh gosh I'm so cheap I don't splurge on anything. I've got a cup full of pens that DON'T work. I have to alternate between 9 writing utencils just to sign my name!

I am a pen hoarder and a pen thief. Fine point, sharpie markers, sharpie pens, highlighters, gel pens and so much more!

So I just started following your blog, was looking for something to entertain myself a little more. Anyway I think you do a good job with it and I wouldn't be able to live without steno pads or post its. I love them both!

Fell fast and hard for my (barely a week old) Plexi-Craft desk organizer. Also, dying to know what is the dish holding what appears to be your biz cards and where can I find one? I am bonkers for thnigs that HOLD office supplies. The Container store has issued a restraining order against me. Honestly, they pob issued it on my husbands behalf since I have been known to drop bundles on organizational supplies.

Another office/school supply addict here! I have been obsessed with such supplies for as long as I can remember. I love pens, Sharpies, markers, notebooks, and the list goes on. Um, you may have even seen when I posted about a stapler maybe a month back-- yeah, a stapler. I am always content to wander around an office supply store just staring at their goods!

I live LOVE luxurious pens!

darkened_jade said...

My work desk has an entire shoe box of lost-and-claimed items. Everything from pens, to crayons, to paper clips, to glitter tubes, to glue, to thumb tacks, and on the list goes. I can't stand to see another orphaned pen get thrown away before it is truly out of ink.

As far as stuff I buy, I am a highlighter addict. Have several packs stashed in my drawer, just in case my favourite colour of the moment runs out.

Liz said...

I love a nice, neat, and well organized desk. I want my supplies where I can get to them.

I love sections. That is why I am loving your desk right now! Everything is so contained without being restrictive or dull. Very inspiring. I am off to rearrange my desk and revamp my containers- yet again!

SHARPIES!!

[i miss the little keychain ones] Nothing is worse than making a mixtape (cd) and not having the proper sharpie to distinguish it.
Gotta have at least one black sharpie at your desk.

One of the best Christmas gifts I remember receiving as a child was an old shirt box that held a pad of paper (remember the ones that were like a brick red color and had a picture - silhouette I think - of an Indian Chief in black?), pencils, crayons, a gum eraser, and I don't recall what else except for some homemade cookies. That had to be between 35 and 40 years ago and I still remember it! And yes, I love everything organized and "pretty." It just draws me in. I can sit and make lists of nothing, just to be using my supplies and writing something.

Have you had the chance to visit Kinokuniya at KLCC yet? They have this little cafe corner upstairs with a view of the KLCC park and the wading pool and it's such a relaxing and stunning view that you wish you don't have to leave and get back to your chores. LOL! Enjoy KL!

Scissors. I am one of six and with all the games of "office" and the boys making "forts" there were NEVER any scissors when you wanted them. I remember my mom always yelling about it (cause the kitchen scissors and hair-cutting scissors were NEVER there when she wanted them). So when I was 18 on my own I bought scissors every time I saw them for sale and stashed them all over my house. One in the kitchen drawr, one by the bedside, one in the Christmas box, the wrapping all-year box, the bathroom drawr and even in my car glove box. And I get a sting of satisfaction evey time I go to the scissor home and find them, right where I left them.
