I've fallen head over heels for the contemporary work of Ahmad Zakii Anwar. Zakii, as he's known, is one of three most sought after Malaysian artists [the others being abstract painter Latiff Mohidin and watercolorist Chang Fee Ming]. His charcoals render me speechless and would make the ultimate memento of our time in Southeast Asia.
Zaki is a super-nice guy! I once visited his studio in JB. He has some very amusing and suggestive still-lifes of fruit (can you say "phallic" and "vulval", boys and girls?) which he has not shown -- done only for his own amusement.
Anyway STPI in Singapore (www.stpi.com.sg) might still have some of his editioned works for sale, which would be way-cheaper than the larger one-off charcoals...(but the charcoals are nicer!!)
I was destined to be a part of the creative world—between my early obsession with Fashion Plates and declaration at a young age that Jem was more hip than Barbie, it was just a matter of time until my fondness for design became a career. A Louisiana native, I moved to New York and led the wholesale divisions for Hollywould and Jill Stuart, as well as designed with couturier Ralph Rucci. With my husband and our furry daughter, Burkly Deluxe, we embarked on a few years of overseas adventures in Malaysia. We are now back Stateside “Inside the Loop” in Houston, Texas.
